Myron Zucker, Inc. - History

Myron Zucker, Inc. (MZI) is a manufacturer and international marketer of low-voltage power quality products. Its product lines include power factor correction capacitors, harmonic filters, and transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS), designed to improve power factor, mitigate harmonics and suppress transients produced within the power systems of facilities.

Our history
During the 1940s and 1950s, Mr. Myron Zucker was a sales representative in the Detroit area for Sprague Power Factor Correction Capacitor Company. He soon recognized that all low-voltage capacitor manufacturers designed their units for use in large fixed banks, typically sized from 100 to 600 KVAR at 480 volts, and 50 to 300 KVAR at 240 volts. There were no products available for specific applications close to the motor starter.

Realizing the energy savings that could be achieved if capacitors were placed closer to the motor load, Mr. Zucker convinced many of the plant engineering personnel in the automotive industry of the potential savings of this application. Although Sprague was not interested in redesigning their capacitors, they did agree to furnish Mr. Zucker with basic capacitor cells for him to include in his new specialized enclosure design. He called this new design "CALmount"; the CAL represents "Capacitor-at-Load".

By 1960, the use of the CAL application was widespread within the major automotive industries. Myron Zucker became known world-wide as "Mr. Capacitor - USA". He expanded the capacitor line and was responsible for many features and options that became standards in the capacitor industry.

Myron Zucker, Inc. was incorporated in Michigan in 1967, with a sales office based in West Bloomfield and manufacturing based in Royal Oak, Michigan.

By the mid-1970s, SCR-type equipment came into the marketplace and Mr. Zucker recognized at once this was going to have an effect on the use of power factor correction capacitors. He designed the first filters to offset harmonic problems brought about by some variations of SCR-type equipment. In the early 1980s, Myron Zucker expanded the product line beyond capacitors to include harmonic filters and line reactors. Today the filter business is the fastest growing segment of our total production.

Mr. Zucker's contributions were so important to the electrical industry that the Myron Zucker Foundation was developed and an annual award was, and still is, presented to the top engineering students in the United States.

In 1987, Mr. Zucker sold his business to his associate, Mr. William Zobel, who had worked with Mr. Zucker from the start of his business and provided manufacturing services for all products. Now under its second generation of family direction, Myron Zucker, Inc. maintains a team-oriented culture, sharing and building on its knowledge and extensive industry experience, and partnering with its customers to solve power quality problems.

Services include technical support, engineering consultation, and power quality analysis. MZI centralized facilities include R&D, product design, test labs, final testing of each completed product, warehousing and customer service. Each MZI capacitor is electrically tested prior to shipment. Materials in MZI capacitors, harmonic filters, and TVSS are from certified suppliers with quality programs in partnership with MZI. Along with meeting customer specifications, where applicable, MZI products exceed Industry Standards such as: UL, UL-C, CSA, CE, ISO, etc. MZI quality assurance programs control all operational functions from management through product design, manufacturing, supply-chains, inspection, testing, warehousing and customer service.

Myron Zucker, Inc. is a privately held business, now organized to respond quickly to customer's needs anywhere in the World. The company relocated to Sterling Heights, Michigan in 2005 and was recently certified as a woman-owned business. MZI products are sold Worldwide directly from our plant in Sterling Heights and through several sales representatives & distributors.
