Oaks Correctional Facility - Manistee, MI
During the late 1990's, Oaks Correctional Facility experienced poor power factor and was penalized, on average, $650 per month, by their electric utility provider. They contacted Myron Zucker, Inc. for guidance on ways to improve their power factor and avoid the penalties. Upon request, they provided Myron Zucker, Inc. with 12 months of electrical utility billing information and described to us the eletrical layout of their facility (motor sizes, locations, transformer size, etc.)
Upon review of the data, MZI recommeded four (4) 50 kVAR capacitors, one each for Buildings 100, 200, 300, and 400, and six (6) 30 kVAR capacitors, for Housing Units 1, 2, 3, and 4. MZI also provided detailed information on the appropriate location of the power factor correction capacitors and additional electrical components needed to complete the install.
In addition to eliminating the power factor penalty, Oaks Correctional Facility received a $200 rebate each month on their electrical utility bill. This resulted in an average monthly savings of $850. They were able to see a payback in less than one year of installation and that included the cost of additional electrical components to complete the installation.
