'Energy Optimization’ Means More than Reducing Energy Consumption
Current technology provides for better control over energy consumption. Drives, soft starts, and switching power supplies have radically improved electrical systems and processes. However, the gains from these non-linear loads are often offset from losses resulting from the harmonics they produce. Harmonic voltages and currents present in a power system can cause problems, either due to their magnitude or resonance.
The causes and characteristics of harmonics and their effects on equipment, such as power factor correction capacitors will be presented. Various harmonic mitigation methods and benefits will be compared and evaluated. Considerations when planning changes to plant electrical loads and harmonic analysis methods will be reviewed.
